Better late than never. Finally the Indian Government has appreciated the potential of e-learning. The Department of Income Tax (DIT) has roped in NIIT for a innovative STE (Source-Train-Enable) programme where NIIT will select 5000 candidates for becoming ‘Certified Tax Return Preparers’. Over the past one decade even as India has emerged as a e-learning courseware development hub for global companies and governments, e-learning as a tool for training and education was ignored by the Indian government largely due to the apathy of its maladroit bureaucracy.
Let's hope that the wisdom of the Indian government grows as they adopt more e-learning initiatives for others departments. With a academician Prime Minister at the helm, there could be no better time than this for India to streamline its education, training and information dissemination initiatives through e-learning.

You are right. Its time the Indian government serious thinks of educating the masses through e-learning. Where can we go with such a huge pool of illiterates.
Others may feel we have a great future; given the present situation, I see a grim future ahead.
Though India is too slow in implementing innovative technologies, its appreciable even if that comes a little late. Perhaps the poor literacy levels of our politicians and the myopic bureaucracy is responsible for India's sloppy move in frontier technologies.

India is a large democracy and it should do the needful. Or else how do you manage this huge requirements of education for 100 million Indians.
It is good that the government has recognized the importance of e-learning. When the countires like cambodia can take up initiative to use the e-learning to bridge the digital divide why can't India do it. Yes, the world considers India as the best place in the world for e-learning service providers. So the government should invite and encourage more and more e-learning initiatives.
